Diane's Mystery Container
She found this old wooden container, and although she didn't know what it was for, she made another one out of clay, and then asked me to make the handle for it. Bending the eyes through her ceramic version presented a few interesting problems, but I managed not to break it. It's my guess that the original wooden one might have hung under covered wagon as a grease container for the wheel hubs. What do you think?

I have got one of these...I live in Scotland....bought it in a charity shop..you say it is a grease carrying box....have you heard of any other uses..?
ReplyDeleteI have also heard someone say it could have contained Butter. I'm open to ideas. Any idea how old yours is?
ReplyDeleteHi Mike...I do not know how old mine is...but from the ones I have seen recently...it would be the early 1800s....as for uses for it...I have found a few explanations....explanations I do not really agree with....1....A chinese cricket carrying box...( seemingly in the early 1800s chinese farmers used them for transporting a cricket to the fighting ring to pit 2 crickets against each other in a fight.)....2...A matchstick holder.......I agree with neither ....your box looks a lot more crudely made than mine...if you google ANTIQUE WOODEN AND IRON BOXES...you will be able to see a few pics of other boxes....hope I find out.....soon....lol....
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, Paddy. I will definitely check it out on a Google Search. I have seen Cricket cages, and this looks like an over-kill on that idea. If that is a possibility, it must be "One Mean Cricket".
